Frank T. Piller, Prof. Dr.
Frank Piller has spent many years researching the design of customer-focused processes for innovation and value creation, the successful management of radical innovation, and the utilization of external knowledge within the innovation process. Chair of Technology and Innovation Management at RWTH Aachen University, Frank Piller is also Co-Director of the Smart Customization Group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), having previously worked in the MIT Sloan School of Management (2004-2007). He received his doctorate from the University of Würzburg for his thesis on mass customization, before lecturing on the topics of open innovation and user innovation at the Technical University of Munich, where he also chaired the “Customer-Driven Value Creation” research group. He is the author of numerous books, case studies, and articles. As an academic partner to the Think Consult management consultancy, Frank Piller helps companies in their efforts to establish customer-focused innovation management, consulting on topics such as open innovation, idea competition, innovation communities, lead-user techniques, mass customization, and product configuration.
His newsletter on mass customization and open innovation is read by more than 6,000 decision-makers and opinion leaders in these fields. His supervisory and advisory board work supports a number of innovative start-ups and initiatives. At TU Munich, Frank Piller was voted the “Tutor of the Year” in 2006 by his executive MBA students.
